Getting Started with Hazus

This course provides an overview of the capabilities of Hazus, FEMA’s loss estimation tool for earthquake, flood, and hurricane wind hazards. You will learn about the history of Hazus, different levels of Hazus analysis and available Hazus resources and support. You will also learn to install the Hazus software, define a study region (the area of analysis used by Hazus) and begin to explore the basic types of analysis that Hazus can perform. You will also explore the types of information about the social and economic impacts of natural hazards that Hazus can generate.

Introduction to the Hazus Comprehensive Data Management System

The Hazus Comprehensive Data Management System (CDMS) helps Hazus users generate more accurate hazard loss estimations by integrating their own data into the Hazus analysis process. In this course, you will learn the basic workflow for importing site-specific and aggregate data to update Hazus inventories. This course focuses on the process of using CDMS rather than Hazus data requirements or data preparation.

Integrating User-Supplied Data into the Hazus Flood Model

This course introduces you to the options Hazus offers for integrating user-defined riverine flood hazard information into a Hazus study region. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to identify various user-defined Hazus flood analysis tools and describe the advantages and limitations of each.

Introduction to the Hazus Inventory

This course provides a general overview of how the Hazus inventory is compiled and utilized to estimate exposure to various hazards. You will learn the difference between aggregate and site-specific inventory and review which inventory is available for each Hazus model. You will also explore ways to integrate non-Hazus GIS resources into your Hazus analyses for a more complete understanding of a community’s risk.

Introduction to the Hazus Storm Surge Model

This course will help you develop a basic understanding of storm surges, as well as how Hazus models a storm surge hazard. You will explore various industry-standard models and learn the steps to analyze a storm surge event in Hazus. Upon completing this course, you will better understand the storm surge hazard model and how to effectively apply the Hazus results in the mitigation planning process.

Introduction to the Hazus Earthquake Model

This course will introduce you to the components of the Hazus earthquake model. You will be provided with a general overview of how earthquakes occur and learn the difference between a deterministic and probabilistic earthquake scenario and explore examples of each. In learning the methodology behind the software, you will become better equipped to make educated decisions about how to approach an earthquake analysis and utilize its results.

Introduction to the Hazus Flood Model

This course provides an introduction to the components of the Hazus flood model. You will be exposed to a general overview of the model and an explanation of the process of generating a Level 1 hazard analysis for coastal and riverine flooding. Upon completing this course, you will better understand the flood hazard model and the methodologies used in Hazus. This will ultimately help you to make educated decisions about how to approach the software and utilize the results.

Loss Estimation Using the Hazus Hurricane Model

This course addresses the many analysis parameters that can be set in the Hazus hurricane model. You will learn how these parameters impact loss analysis of communities impacted by hurricanes. You will also learn about Hazus’ ability to generate building damage estimates, shelter needs, and economic impacts from hurricane wind events.

Loss Estimation Using the Hazus Earthquake Model

This course builds upon the Introduction to the Hazus earthquake model course. The many analysis parameters you can set in Hazus to conduct earthquake analysis are addressed. You will explore the physical damage model for earthquakes, damage functions for buildings, building losses, loss of use and building debris, hazard parameters, sheltering, and economic losses. By learning methodology behind the software, you will be equipped to make educated decisions about how to approach an earthquake analysis and utilize its results.

Loss Estimation Using the Hazus Flood Model

This course addresses the many analysis parameters you can set in Hazus flood model. You will learn about Hazus’ ability to generate: building damage estimates; losses to essential facilities; impacts on transportation, utility lifelines and agriculture; amount of debris and shelter requirements. You will also learn how the information generated from the flood model can effectively be used by communities to better plan for and prevent losses from future flood events.

Introduction to the Hazus Hurricane Model

This course will help you develop a basic understanding of hurricanes, as well as how Hazus models a hurricane hazard. You will explore various hurricane scenarios including historical, probabilistic and user-defined. Upon completing this course, you will better understand the hurricane hazard model and the methodologies used in Hazus. This will help you make educated decisions about how to approach the software and utilize the results.

Understanding Hazus Earthquake Model Results

This course builds upon the Loss Estimation Using the Hazus Earthquake Model course and explores the various earthquake model results. In addition to providing an overview of the results formats—such as reports, tables and maps—this course explores the model’s analysis outputs, including direct physical damages, utility and transportation damages, debris and direct economic losses (such as casualties and sheltering). You will also learn to identify the key guidelines for properly interpreting and applying the outputs of the earthquake model.

Understanding Hazus Hurricane Model Results

This course addresses the various hurricane model results that Hazus can produce for a hurricane loss estimation study. In addition to providing an overview of the results formats (reports, tables and maps), this course explores the model’s analysis outputs, which include physical damages, utility and transportation damages and economic losses (such as sheltering). You will learn how to apply these results for better decision making.

Understanding Hazus Flood Model Results

The various flood model results and an overview of their formats (reports, tables and maps) are provided in this course. This course also explores the model’s analysis outputs, which include physical damages, utility and transportation damages, agriculture losses and economic losses (such as sheltering). You will learn to identify the key guidelines for properly interpreting and applying the outputs of the flood model.
