An Earthquake Town Hall meeting for the Kansas City Metro area will be held on February 19, 2009.
An earthquake occurs just about every day somewhere in the Midwest, yet many people in the Kansas City area may not know anything about them. Even though the chance of a damaging earthquake affecting this area is low, there is a need to be aware of the earthquake hazard that exists in Kansas and Missouri. This program is designed to inform local citizens about our earthquake threat, planning which is taking place to help coordinate the response after a major earthquake in the Midwest, and steps you can take to better prepare for such an event. Hear from local, state, and federal officials about these topics, ask questions about earthquakes, and take home valuable information for your family, home, or business.

Hello all,

I am looking for some recommendations on hardware specs for using HAZUS in an enterprise environment; as in building a workstation or virtual machine that will have the processing power and storage space necessary to perform and store HAZUS analyses in short-turnaround scenarios.

The hardware must be suitable for fast and constant use, for the next 2-3 years at least.

I have previously used everything from and older Dell PowerEdge 400SC (Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, 160GB drive space) which was quite inadequate, despite the hardware recommendations mentioned by FEMA, to a Core 2 Duo machine with 3GB RAM and 500GB drive space that was quicker but still not fast enough for short turnaround tasks.

I am open to the idea of both an individual workstation, or a virtual machine / server solution.

Anybody out there using HAZUS in a high-pressure environment that can recommend hardware or specifications of hardware that can conduct analysis fast and reliably? How much drive space are you using?

I will be using MR4 on Windows XP, most likely.

I am working in the private sector now, with Emergency Management clients, but previously worked at FEMA in the Mapping & Analysis Center.

Thanks!

-Hunter

Good Day,

I recently received my copy of HAZUS-MH (v1.4) - I am a newbie so please bear with me !

I would like to use HAZUS-MH to produce some generalized results (multi-state) at the 500 yr flood plain. Some parameters I am interested in are resident population of a county in the 500yr flood plain, vehicle/building exposure of the county, and transportation infrastructure of the county in the 500yr floodplain.

As I read through the user manual, I quickly realized that the for an individual’s regions of interest, HAZUS-MH calculates the flood plain based on DEMs and riverine networks. As a very savvy GIS operator, it dawned on me that this would make a multi-state study fairly daunting (if not impossible)!

Does anyone have any suggestions of how I might best attack this issue ? I wonder if the CDMS will help with part of this but perusing through the data, it does not appear that the 500 or 100 yr floodplains are part of the source data so no matter what I need to use ESRI’s Spatial Analyst to calculate the floodplain.

I would like to start up a talk for those of use using hazus in a virtual environment. I work for a university and we teach emergency administration. We have lots of students online so i was asked to come up with a solutions for them to use hazus from home. We decided to go with VMWare ESXi on a dell server. It runs great but I did notice that you need a very hefty processing environment depending on how many users will be using hazus at any one time. Anyone who has used hazus knows that it really works out the processors when your processing your reaches or finding your streams. The ESXi has a load balancing for the processor so that no one person could take all the processing power. At first i did not set this option and the first person got all the processor power and the rest of our students were going along at 50 mhz. I will be making a more details report as well as some video of our set up. I welcome some comments and discussion on this and brain storm some ways to improve it. If you have any questions please post them here or email me.

My next endeavor will be hazus on Mac OS X
