One of my main goals of the WAHUG is data coordination and sharing. It would be great to have a statewide building stock and essential facilities update for every county and have HAZUS runs completed for earthquake and flood for every community (where we have data that is). I hope that we can use the WAHUG as a way to do that together. I am trying to update the datasets I have, but that is by no means complete. Please use this forum to let all WAHUG members know what your community needs to be able to run HAZUS successfully! Maybe a WAHUG member already has updated data for your community. And if not we can work on building that data together. We can also work through any data issues or questions you may have. So feel free to type away and let us know how the WAHUG can help get you to the level 2 HAZUS analysis.

What would you like to get out of the WAHUG?

Since we have started the WAHUG again, it is a perfect time to identify what you would like to get out of the WAHUG and what tools, trainings, products, etc. you would like to come out of this group? Some of my ideas include data coordination, meaning updated GBS and essential facilities information, and earthquake and flood scenarios upgraded to HAZUS 2.0 and eventually 2.1. Other ideas include training. Training can either be technical and specific to HAZUS, or broad overviews that can be delivered to your community and citizens. I would also really like our work in the WAHUG to be showcased nationwide in conferences as well as publications. If you have a great project you have done why not submit a paper for it or present your work at a conference. I am also interested on ideas of including community officials on our calls and in our group without getting overly technical. Many of you on this group are involved in the GIS community; how do we spread the word of HAZUS to those other community officials? So those are just a few of my ideas. Would like to get everyone else’s thoughts. So please start chatting away! Your input will go a long a way in framing what the WAHUG can do and the direction we want to go.

The first meeting of the newly reformed Washington HAZUS User Group (WAHUG) was held at the Washington State Emergency Management building located at Camp Murray, the headquarters of the Washington National Guard, on March 19, 2009. Twenty-four people attended the meeting in person with additional participation via conference call and web presentation. Attendees included GIS professionals representing city and county government agencies and private businesses. Cathy Walker, the GIS Analyst for the Washington Military Department, IT Division gave a presentation that included background on HAZUS User Groups, information on the HAZUS software, specifically the earthquake and flood models, and available HAZUS training including the HAZUS Credentialing Program.
