I checked the location of your earthquake, and it looks to be in the middle of Utah. That’s over 500 miles from San Francisco. HAZUS will not even check for earthquake damage that far from the epicenter.

Woops. I was checking -112.409, not -122.409. That’s what I get for skimping on the coffee.

I’m going to try to recreate your error and get back to you.

Would you mind trying something for me?

Can you run and earthquake analysis with all the analysis options chosen except for “Advanced Engineering Bldg Mode” and “User-defined Structures”? If you get a warning that running contours will slow the analysis down, be sure run the contours anyway. We will need the contour data next if you still have trouble.

After this new run, do you still get no damage results?

Let’s check to make sure that HAZUS is at least recording some shaking for your earthquake scenario. We ran Contour Maps during the analysis, so we can do the following.

Click Results—> Ground Motion or Ground Failure—> Contours or Ground Failure Maps. When the Contour Maps window appears, choose PGA Contour, and then click “Map”. This creates a colored contour layer over your study region. This layer shows us the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) for your earthquake scenario. For a 7.0 earthquake, we should see some pretty high PGA values, with values getting higher towards the epicenter of the quake.

If PGA values for your study region do not exceed 0.6g, then the problem is likely with the scenario itself. However, if we see reasonably high PGA values, but no damage, then the shaking from the scenario not being applied to the building inventory to damage it.

I think it would help to see what your study region looks like. Can you post a picture of the PGA Contours overlaying your study region here? Be sure to include the Table of Contents in your picture so I can see the values of the contours.

The easiest way to take a picture is to press “CTRL” and “Print Screen” at the same time while you have HAZUS open to the contour map (on some computers you may have to press CTRL + Shift + Print Screen to make it work). This creates a screen capture. Then in Widnows, open Paint and click Edit—> Paste. This places the screen capture into Paint. Finally, save the file as a .jpeg and post it here using the Attachments box in the USEHAZUS forums.

Just to make sure, your computer does meet the hardware and software requirements for running HAZUS, correct?

The requirements for HAZUS can be found here:

HAZUS Minimum Requirements

(Even though it is not listed above, many people have reported successfully running HAZUS on Windows XP SP3.)

I want to make sure we are not missing anything obvious before we continue to troubleshoot.
