The Northeast Hazus User Group (NEHUG) is being revitalized with a fresh vision and a renewed focus to be a forum for HAZUS users to offer technological, academic, and strategic assistance to each other in our collective efforts to build disaster-resistant communities in New England. The NEHUG kickoff meeting is set for 1/30/2014 at 2pm EST. If you’re interested in participating, please contact Eric at james.eidswick@fema.dhs.gov.

The restart of this collaborative group is being led by J. Eric Eidswick and Paul Morey of FEMA Region 1 Mitigation Division, and Zack Baccalla, Risk MAP Regional Program Management Lead for the region. We will be leaning on the analysis expertise of Ed Fratto and Ben Silverstein of Northeast States Emergency Consortium (NSEC), educational outreach expertise of Shane Bradt of University of New Hampshire, and national outreach expertise of Brandon Chiazza and Jamie Caplan.

The group will support Hazus users (novice to expert) and consumers, advance mitigation planning, recovery and response, and foster recruitment at the academic level. Our goal is to attract and engage a diverse group of regional stakeholders, including users and consumers, who are committed to collaborating for the integration and advancement of Hazus loss estimation software, resulting in the support of sustainable, disaster-resilient communities within FEMA Region 1.

We believe we can achieve this mission by developing relationships with various stakeholders across all sectors (public, private, & academic), and are dedicated to attracting not just other Hazus users, but also high level consumers and decision makers within the region. It is through these collaborative relationships that we will be able to update existing models, improve inventory data, and make model results more accessible across the region. Hazus has proven incredibly valuable during Super Storm Sandy, recent flooding events in Colorado and North Dakota, and other natural hazard events in past years. We intend to expand the use of the tool and its results here in the Northeast by utilizing the software in similar ways.

I am looking forward to a very productive 2014!

Cheers, Eric
